Importing glass bottles from China is not difficult. Importing them profitably is.
We have seen buyers negotiate cents off the bottle price while ignoring container utilization, destination charges, breakage, or tariff classification. A cheap quotation can become expensive after freight and import costs.
In May 2024, Reuters reported that a 40ft container could be priced at around US$4,615 from China to Northern Europe, and at around US$6,061 from China to the U.S. East Coast, as a result of the disruption caused by the Red Sea.

Why glass bottles should be imported from China?
China has more to offer than low unit prices. The better the advantage is supply chain depth.
Bottles, caps, corks, bamboo lids, droppers, labels, cartons, screen printing, frosting and spray coating, embossing and custom molds can all be obtained in the same manufacturing ecosystem.
For such buyers as beverage brands and food manufacturers, cosmetic companies, packaging distributors and importers purchasing wholesale glass bottles from China, it is a good choice for them.
Do not use the question “What's the price for the 500 ml bottle?”.
Explain capacity, weight of the bottle, dimensions, color, neck finish, closure, decoration, annual demand, method of packing and country of destination. If using custom bottles, you will also want to determine whether you want to have a new mold made or the option of going with an existing design.
Better specifications produce better quotations.
Find and Verify Suppliers
The best glass bottle suppliers in China are not necessarily the cheapest. We look for a supplier whose manufacturing model matches the order.
| Supplier Type | Best For | Main Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Large repeat orders | Higher MOQ |
| Packaging integrator | Bottles, closures and decoration | Some outsourcing |
| Trading company | Small mixed orders | Less production control |
Before ordering, verify business registration, factory location, equipment, capacity, QC procedures, export experience, and relevant reports.
A polished website proves very little. Production capability does.
MOQ, Samples and Quotations
MOQ may differ for bottles, colors, printing, closures, cartons, and molds. Ask suppliers to separate them.
Always approve physical samples before mass production. Check dimensions, capacity, closure fit, sealing, decoration, and filling-line compatibility.
And compare quotations by landed economics, not bottle price. A US$0.28 bottle packed inefficiently can cost more than a US$0.30 bottle that fits thousands of additional units into the same container.
FOB, CIF and Shipping
FOB often gives experienced importers better freight control because the buyer appoints the forwarder for the main transport. CIF can be convenient, but destination charges need careful review.
Glass is heavy and fragile. FCL is usually preferable for repeat wholesale orders because the cargo receives less handling. LCL works for samples and smaller orders but creates more handling points.
Choose 20GP, 40GP, or 40HC from actual weight, volume, packing layout, and destination cost.
Container choice should be calculated. Not guessed.

Apply Customs Codes and Documentation
Classifications of many containers of glass for carrying, packing or moving goods are dependent on the type and capacity of the container, its purpose and the destination country, and are therefore in the HS heading 7010.
Do not guess.
The final investigation of certain Chinese glass wine bottles found that no injury was caused in the United States and closed in February 2025 without an antidumping-duty order on the imports investigated. Here is a handy reminder to consider product scope and the ultimate legal result when estimating import costs.
For U.S. formal entries, CBP says importers should determine tariff classification and duty rates and provide documents such as the commercial invoice, packing list when available, shipping documents, and any required special documentation. The invoice should include an adequate product description, quantity, value, and appropriate HTSUS subheading.
Other markets differ, so confirm requirements before shipment.
Calculate Landed Cost
We use this formula:
Landed Cost = Product + Decoration + Packaging + China Logistics + Freight + Insurance + Duty/Tax + Customs Fees + Port Charges + Final Delivery
Then divide by usable bottles received.
Suppose 30,000 bottles arrive and 300 are damaged; calculate the cost per bottle using 29,700 units to find the cost, per bottle.
This is more important than the supplier's FOB unit price.
Common Import Mistakes
The most expensive mistakes are predictable:
- Choosing the lowest unit price without comparing packing efficiency.
- Ordering production without approving samples.
- Ignoring destination charges.
- Using an assumed HS code.
- Paying the final balance before inspection.
- Developing a custom mold before proving demand.
- Failing to test bottle and closure compatibility.
Prove the package first. Scale second.

FAQ
How to import the bottles with glass seam from China?
The import of glass bottles from China involves specifying the packaging requirements, finding a suitable supplier, sampling approval, negotiation on price and Incoterms, arranging production and inspection, booking cargo, preparation of customs documents, tariff classification confirmation, duty and tax payment and final delivery from the port of origin to the buyer's warehouses.
Supplier selection and logistics should be considered in the same package as bottle dimensions, carton design, use of containers and freight all have an impact on the landed cost.
In what category are glass bottles classified with?
Glass bottles for carrying or packing items for commercial use are typically assigned to the general tariff code 7010, however the specific tariff number is dependent upon the specific characteristics of the bottle, its capacity, the product it is being used for and the importing country's national tariff schedule, and should be confirmed by the importer before shipment with official customs resources or a qualified broker.
Do not use a four digit heading for the basis of a landed cost.
Bring In, Not On, Better Quality Items
Importing glass bottles from China is best achieved when the sourcing, packaging, logistics and customs costs are all considered to be one cost model.
If you are considering China glass bottle manufacturers, please send in your orders quantity, closure, decoration, destination and target capacity. We can advise appropriate stock or a custom quote and give an accurate price to the wholesaler.
