Case Study: How a Pickle Jar Factory Improved Clarity for a UK Pickle Brand

Minghang was established as a reliable pickle jar manufacturer, and the pickle brand in the UK used high quality artisanal pickles and aimed to sell them to the supermarkets and online stores. The brand wanted a stable pickle jar manufacturing company that would supply very transparent glass jars to increase the visibility of the product and shelf life. They designed glass pickle jars with straight sides and cylindrical bodies, thickened at the bottom, and made of high-flint glass in order to be as transparent as possible. Challenge

Hazy Glass

Certain production batches were slightly cloudy and not appearing uniformly clear and this was not good to the premium look of the pickles.

Surface Imperfections

The surface of the jars was scratched and had micro-bubbles as they got formed when the process was being done and when handling them; this caused increased rejection rates and delays in the production.

Cause Analysis

Our engineers made material tests and production audits and found the primary reasons:

• The presence of impurities in the raw glass mixture resulted in the micro-bubbles and the light diffusion.
• Mold polishing was also inadequate so fines friction marks occurred during forming.

Solution

Raw Material Refinement

To make clearer glass, we improved silica purity, changed batch formulations and also improved melting and cooling conditions.

Optimization of Mold and Handling.

Minghang re-polished molds, added soft-contact handling equipment and provided protective surface finishes during post-production in order to remove scratches and defects.

Result

The clarity of glass increased more than 80 percent, the surface defects were reduced to a minimum, and the production yield was increased. The UK brand increased the shelf life and consumer feeling, and it proved that Minghang is a reliable pickle jar factory to produce high quality glass jars.
