Case Study: Custom Essential Oil Bottles for a French Aromatherapy Brand

Client Background

Specializes in a Canadian organic oil producer, cold-dumped walnuts and seed oils (eg, walnuts, sunflowers), which aims to expand to the petty retail. They needed a custom oil glass bottle to match their premium positioning: 250 ml and 500 ml clear glass bottles (to control), a wooden hat, and a silk-screen logo with a narrow neck. Our Challenge

Initial samples revealed key issues. The narrow neck caused oil to clog during pouring, especially with thicker oils like walnut. The wooden caps warped in humid conditions, leading to loose fits and potential leaks. Additionally, the silk-screened logo peeled off when bottles were washed, harming brand visibility. These flaws threatened to undermine their retail launch.

Root Cause Analysis

Our team identified the problems: the neck’s 12mm diameter was too narrow for viscous oils. The wooden caps lacked a protective seal, absorbing moisture. The logo peeled because the glass surface wasn’t properly prepped (insufficient cleaning before printing), weakening adhesion. All issues stemmed from production oversights, not design flaws.

Our Solution

To fix the inserting issue, we widened the neck to 16 mm and added a subtle internal ridge to guide the flow without splash. For the cap, we treated wood with food-safe wax to resist moisture and added a silicone gasket to a tight seal. To secure the logo, we introduced a pre-painting acid wash to dig the glass surface, which makes the ink permanently tied. We tested 50 prototypes to validate reforms.

Result

The final oil glass bottle performed innocently: the broad neck allowed the smooth to be inserted, the wooden cap remained intact, and the logo was crisp after washing. We distributed 15,000 bottles (8,000 pcs 250 ml (7,000pcs 500 ml) on time. Customer's retail launch saw strong sales, in which customers praised "practical yet elegant" packaging.
