Case Study: How a Glass Oil Bottle Factory Solved Leakage for Italy Brands

Client Background

One Italian premium olive oil company was in need of a good company to do the packaging with the use of glass oil bottles to enhance its performance in the export markets. The company required the stylish but practical glass oil bottles that were able to contain the leakage during storage and transportation over a long distance. The tailor-made package was to be a 500ml dark green bottle of dorica with tall bodies, cylindrical, and narrow necks and the 31.5mm ROPP finish on aluminum caps with pourers. The customer selected Minghang because we have high competence in terms of precision in finishing the neck, performance optimization as well as stable mass production.

Challenge

Oil Leakage Around Cap Seal

Bottles filled and shipped were leakage at the cap of bottles, resulting in the appearance of a small amount of oil on labels and the carton itself.

Inconsistent Crimping Performance

In the process of capping, the bottle neck dimensions differed, which resulted in non-reliable crimping pressure thus resulting in inconsistent sealing.

Cause Analysis

The root causes were found by our technical team, who did comprehensive checks and came up with the following:

• Small deviations in roundness and finish diameter of neck had an influence on consistent cap compression.
• The stress remaining along the mouth of the bottle led to slight deformation following annealing leading to a decrease in the sealing efficiency.

Solution

Control of Precision Finishing Necks

Being an old glass oil bottle factory, we reformed the neck moulds and tightened the tolerance degree of diameter and roundness. The accuracy gauges were used to verify each batch.

Optimized Annealing Process

To achieve a uniform sealing surface at the bottle mouth, we optimized annealing controls to remove the internal stress and have a stable sealing surface.

Cap Compatibility & Seal Testing

We conducted torque tests, tilt leakage tests, and vacuum tests under the caps of the client to make sure that it is fully compatible and performs leak-proof.

Result

The problem of leakages was completely eliminated and the seal consistency was better. The Italian brand minimized product waste and improved packaging of products in the form of exports.
